Twitter Critics

After reading Danah Boyd’s article pertaining to twitter, I realized that there are many people who are abnormally opposed to this particular social networking site, which seems kind of silly to me. She mentions a study that concluded that “40.55% of the tweets they coded are pointless babble”. First of all, what do they consider pointless babble? If you’re reading tweets of people that you personally chose to follow, then the majority of it probably isn’t pointless to you. If however, you are a third party who knows nothing about the person tweeting, the tweets most likely won’t make much sense to you, causing them to be categorized as “pointless”. It’s all subjective. Secondly, if you’re following people who you think pointlessly babble all the time, unfollow them. You decide what you read on twitter. Thirdly, it’s called social networking. Being social is different from being studious, philosophical, scientific… etc. Of course, depending on the person these worlds can overlap, but to consider something pointless because it isn’t a profound statement is wrong in my opinion.

Personally, I don’t understand why people get so worked up over twitter. If you don’t like the site, then don’t set up an account. It shouldn’t matter if other people use it or not.

That’s all :)
