The question we need to be asking isn’t whether there is sacrifice; sacrifice is inevitable with serious change. The question we need to be asking is whether the sacrifice is worth it or, more importantly, what we can do to help make the sacrifice worth it.

While reading the article Why Abundance is Good: A Reply to Nick Carr by Clay Shirky this quote stuck out to me. I think it’s a good neutralizer of the two articles, for it agrees with Carr by insinuating that media is changing drastically, but also questions whether the change could actually be beneficial for society. In Carr’s article, he seemed convinced that the internet is causing the human mind to deteriorate, whereas Shirky remained a bit more calm, saying that similar predicaments have occurred in the past with comparable reactions and it simply created a better world once everyone adapted to the changes.

These are two very different viewpoints on the issue, who do find yourself siding with?
